Noah Breuer

In 2004, when Noah B. Breuer was finishing his bachelor’s degree in printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design, three of his childhood friends were heading to the Iraq war. Breuer kept in close contact with them throughout their service and has used their stories, as well as photographs they stored in their cameras and cell phones, to create a series of lithographs. The resulting images “reveal human beings filled with excitement, hope, naïveté, uncertainty, fear and fantasies,” he says. His friends’ loyalty and perseverance in serving the country inspired him, and he feels a responsibility to share their experiences with others through art. “Having personal friends serving in this conflict has humanized my view of the military,” Breuer says.

Breuer created a series of lithograph prints that capture Marines through the view of a riflescope or night vision goggles. In the print titled Gunner, a Marine is operating a weapon atop an open air, unarmored Humvee during the initial invasion of Iraq 2004. ”Miraculously, he returned home without physical injury,” says Breuer of his friend. Other lithographs in the series depict vehicles, weapons, children and animals.
