Ramon Jimenez, MD

After 30 years as an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Ramon L. Jiménez now serves as a consultant to a busy sports medicine and general orthopaedics clinic in Monterey, Calif. He started painting while serving as a major in the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell, Ky. Dr. Jiménez has found that the medium he most enjoys – watercolors -- is similar to performing orthopaedic surgery. “It is relatively quick and requires execution of a plan with minimal opportunity to change your mind in midstream. You need to study and know your subject; get ready and go,” he says.

Raining Paratroopers

Watercolor

From July 1972 to June 1974, Dr. Jiménez was one of six orthopaedic surgeons caring for 36,000 paratroopers at Fort Campbell, Ky. He recalls their young ages, dedication and hard work. “I wanted to keep them whole and safe,” he says. This image shows 3,000 troops jumping at once during a training session, a sight Dr. Jiménez says was “very moving, very impressive and very effective.”
